Murky water is a term commonly used to describe pond or lake water that is cloudy, grey, brown, green, muddy, hazy, or otherwise filled with suspended particles consisting of some combination of organic and inorganic particles. In general, murky water is undesirable and unpleasant to look at. Additionally, murky pond water can come with odors or unpleasant smells. There are a number of causes for murky water including unbalanced nutrient or pH levels and excessive amounts of animal or plant waste in pond water. The Super’s Choice line of pond maintenance products includes a variety of environmentally friendly pond treatment products that are ideal for creating and maintaining irrigation lakes and ornamental ponds on golf courses.  These innovative water treatments contain no harsh chemicals and will not harm fish, plants, or turfgrass when used at recommended rates.

Understanding Causes of Murky Water in Ponds

Before you can clear the murky water, you must first understand the common types of water quality problems and the primary causes of these problems. Common problems that are found in golf course ponds, commercial ponds, farm ponds, residential ponds, and irrigation ponds include muck or bottom sludge, murky water, unbalanced nutrients, and unpleasant odors. General causes for these problems include high levels of phosphates and nitrates from fertilizer runoff, decaying organic plant debris, fish waste, and a lack of beneficial pond bacteria.

Golf course ponds and lakes often experience murky water and poor water quality as a result of several environment influences, commonly found in or around these types of ponds. For example, golf course ponds often receive larger amount of fertilizer runoff due to the general design of the land as well as the fact that the turfgrass requires frequent fertilization. Fertilizer runoff reduces pond water quality by introducing excess problem-nutrients to the water, such as nitrates and phosphates. In addition, golf course ponds suffer from murky water as a result of high levels of plant debris entering the water. Common types of plant debris include grass clippings, leaves from nearby trees or shrubs, and dead and decaying plants and algae.

Murky water can be classified as two general types:

  • The first type of murky water is that which is created by a natural buildup of organic wastes. These wastes float as suspended solids in the water column and create the appearance of murky water. The heavier particles settle to the bottom and create bottom sludge (muck). Super’s Choice beneficial pond bacteria will naturally and effectively eliminate these decaying organic wastes. This results in clean and clear water, as well as reduced bottom sludge.
  • The second type of murky water is that which is created by mud & clay. The lighter mud & clay particles float as suspended solids. Super’s Choice Water Clarifier (Flocculant) will pull these suspended particles together and settle them to the bottom of the pond. This results in clean and clear water.

How to Clear Murky Water in Ponds and Lakes

There are a number of products in the Super’s Choice line of pond cleaning products are designed to improve water clarity and eliminate murky water. These products are manufactured with natural, safe and effective and contain no harsh chemicals. These pond treatments are ideal for use in golf course ponds and irrigation lakes. They work to resolve the underlying causes and reasons for murky water, not just the symptoms of the murky water. These products help to create and maintain clean, clear water and a healthy aquatic eco system. The following are some of the popular Super’s Choice pond maintenance products that can be used for clearing murky water in irrigation lakes and ponds.

Beneficial Pond Bacteria

Super’s Choice Pond Bacteria is a 100% natural formulation of beneficial pond bacteria cultures and natural ingredients, designed to eliminate organic wastes from irrigation lakes and ornamental ponds. This results in the elimination of murky water, bottom sludge, problem-nutrients and odors.

Concentrated Water Clarifier (Flocculant)

Super’s Choice Concentrated Water Clarifier is a highly concentrated flocculant. It is approximately four times as concentrated as other Clarifiers and is a safer formula as well. This product can be used to quickly clear up cloudy water due to organic and inorganic particles. This safe and natural product contains no harsh chemicals. It works by pulling together small, suspended particles that are too light to sink to the bottom of the pond and thus remain suspended throughout the water column - causing murky water. Once these smaller particles are pulled together to create larger particles, they are then heavy enough to settle to the bottom of the pond, creating clear water. This concentrated water clarifier will remove both inorganic particles (mud and clay), as well as organic particles (decaying plants and animal wastes) from pond water.

Natural Phosphate Binder

Super’s Choice Natural Phosphate Binder is a plant-based, non-chemical replacement to aluminum sulfate (ALUM). It can be used in large ponds and lakes to help reduce excess phosphate levels. In addition, unlike ALUM, it provides over 70 trace minerals to support beneficial pond bacteria.  It also helps with minor settling of mud and clay particles to help clear murky water.
